Biography

A clinical professor of psychiatry at Trinity College, an associate professor of psychiatry at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), and a former consultant psychiatrist at St Patrick’s University Hospital, Ireland. A graduate of the RCSI, Trinity College, and King’s College, London, his training in psychiatry took place at St Patrick’s University Hospital, Ireland, the Maudsley Hospital in London, and the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College, London.

He has been a Governor of St Vincent’s Psychiatric Hospital in Fairview, Dublin, a member of the health committee of the Irish Medical Council, and a former member of the Board of Mental Health Commission, Ireland.

He officially took up his current role, as the Inspector of Mental Health Services, Ireland, in July 2023.

Jim is an experienced writer and public speaker on mental health issues, and has more than 50 research publications, as well as numerous books, to his name.

He loves to paint. He has many other interests including sport, theatre, and poetry, as well as a love of music, which extends to being a proud member of a Celtic-Persian fusion musical ensemble, The Art of Collaboration: https://theartofcollaboration.ie/.
